"Made in America" has broad appeal at variety of levels
This article originally appeared on The Business Journal (Sept. 20, 2013). U.S. Mart, a Venice, Florida-based retailer, celebrated Labor Day by supporting U.S. veterans and manufacturers. The company, which only sells American-made products, donated 20 percent of that day’s profits to the local American Legion. During that same holiday weekend, retailers, including Best Buy, Kiehl’s, Omaha Steaks, Wal-Mart, Ball and Buck, All American Clothing and OTTE, recognized the American worker by offering special deals on American-made products. Through Wal-Mart’s involvement, this marketing campaign became linked to a two-day summit in Orlando, which focused on the “Made in America” concept. Here, U.S. Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker, eight governors, officials from three dozen states and 500 businesses discussed how the U.S. could grow its manufacturing base to...

Meet Your Neighbor: She’s an American Girl

Meet Your Neighbor: She's an American Girl
This article originally appeared on Sarasota Day (Aug. 27, 2013). So as you may or may not know, I am in the marketing profession. From time to time, I am asked to help plan events. This happened most recently about three months ago and as I was in the midst of party planning hell creating invitations, approving logos, and ordering promotional items, the neon colored hats I ordered for the event were delivered onto my desk. I eagerly grabbed a pair of scissors to rip them open like a kid on Christmas morning, super excited to see this one item that was going to add fun and happiness to my boring grand opening event. But… my enthusiasm immediately turned to horror as I noticed in dread...

US Mart and American Legion Host Labor Day Event

US Mart, a retail store selling only made in the USA products, joined forces with the third largest American Legion post in the state of Florida for a Labor Day Celebration on Sept. 2, 2013. The American Legion, NO-VEL Post 159 and The Sons of the American Legion hosted the event held at 1770 E. Venice Avenue, right across the parking lot from US Mart. U.S. Congressman Vern Buchanan field agent Danny Bilyeu addressed the crowd with a Labor Day message, and Goodwill Manasota Veteran Program Manager Christopher Davis spoke about the Veterans and their Families Job Fair being held the following weekend. Patrons who visited the American Legion on Labor Day were invited to walk over and shop for all-American novelty items at US Mart, and 20% of all...

    Patriotic Part

Patriotic Part   This article originally appeared in the Business Observer (July 19, 2013). Local veterinarian Molly Caldwell Kraut’s business passion for the last 15 years has been in animals, not necessarily the American spirit. But her new venture, a retail-general store that only sells products totally assembled and manufactured in the U.S., from Elmer’s Glue to Texas Jeans, is all about patriotic entrepreneurialism. The store, US Mart, in a Venice strip mall next to a Subway and an Italian restaurant, carries national pride down its phone number: 941-412-1USA. Kraut is even in the final stages of opening a U.S. Post Office branch inside the 3,000-square-foot store. US Mart is the culmination of several conversations Kraut has had with her daughter and father-in-law. Those chats…

    US Mart Venice Florida

Venice store only sells items made in USA   This article originally appeared in the Sarasota Herald-Tribune (July 3, 2013). VENICE – Molly Kraut found out just how hard it is to sell only made-in-America products when she began ordering American flags.   It turns out that, while the flags were made in America, the stands came from China. So, at US Mart, you can buy a flag, but not a stand. Kraut, 47, a veterinarian by profession, this year opened US Mart on East Venice Avenue, a modern-day general store that sells everything from brooms to toys, all united by one principle: Made In America. Kraut said the store grew out of years of her own shopping frustrations. Her father-in-law was concerned about the growing…
